Founder and Creative Director Jamie Lim reincarnates her childhood memories of South East Asia into contemporary bags for California-based label Kayu. Founded with a commitment to ethical production, eco-friendly sourcing and fair-trade labor, the all-female team employs artisans from the Philippines, Indonesia and Malaysia for their signature hand woven and embroidered products. They’ve even teamed up with initiatives in San Francisco to provide training and alternative income to recent immigrants through custom monogramming work. Made with sustainable straw, by-product shell, recycled wood and natural dyes, Kayu bags embody both tradition and sophistication with a bottom-line that’s worth buying into.
