Citizens of Humanity was established in 2003, by denim master Jerome Dahan. Having grown up in France, Dahan was greatly influenced by fashion icons – such as Jane Birkin – from the 1960s and 1970s. After cutting his teeth designing and branding for Guess and Lucky Brand Jeans, he settled in Southern California and co-founded Seven for All Mankind in 2000 with two partners, focusing on the contemporary, female denim wearer market. Citizens of Humanity soon followed, as the direct result of Dahan’s determination to elevate the denim market for consumers. Luxury denim that focused on fit, fabric quality, and wash with a certain tres chic soon became the aspiration for other premium denim lines.
